It is scrambled Latin taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a text Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The words are real Latin, but the sentences do not say anything, which is the point: readers look at the layout instead of reading. It spread as filler text through Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and desktop publishing software later.

It looks like real text, with words and sentences of natural lengths, without distracting people with what it says. Replace it with the real copy before publishing, and test the design with it too: real headings and paragraphs are often longer or shorter than the placeholder.

Yes. The words are picked at random from the usual lorem ipsum vocabulary, and Regenerate gives you a new text. Raising the count adds text at the end and keeps what is already there. The first sentence can always be the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”

Words are the words of the generated text. Characters are those of the plain text, spaces and line breaks included, without HTML tags or Markdown markers, so the count is the same whichever format you copy.

HTML wraps each paragraph in <p> and puts list items in a <ul> with one <li> per item. Markdown separates paragraphs with a blank line and starts each list item with a dash. Plain text separates paragraphs with a blank line and puts each list item on its own line.
